Position Overview:
Under the general guidance of the Public Services and Systems Librarian and working as part of the Learning Commons team, the Library Technician's primary purpose is to provide Learning Commons desk service to clientele, assisting them with the use of Learning Commons services and resources (including equipment and minor computer troubleshooting), circulation of library materials, and maintaining an environment conducive to learning. In addition to opening and/or closing responsibilities of the Learning Commons, the Library Technician works closely with the Instructional and Collections Librarian in the acquisition, cataloguing, and processing of library materials. The Library Technician also works closely with the Writing Specialists with projects connected to the Writing Centre. Flexibility is required to successfully attend to issues in this public space.
Main work area is the Learning Commons, a social learning space for students, so a high level of concentration is required to complete assigned duties when not responding to user needs. During peak hours, stress can be high due to high demand for Learning Commons materials and services. There is a moderate impact of error when working with the University of Calgary library system circulation, acquisition, cataloguing and processing records. Priorities are set by the Learning Commons team leads. Projects and assignments are carried out to support the operations of the Learning Commons as an integrated unit. Some lifting (under 10 kg) is required. This position reports to the Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning.
The successful candidate will work Sunday through Thursday (35 work hours per week). Flexibility will be required to work in different shifts if needed, e.g., mornings (7:30 am – 3:30 pm), afternoon/evening (12:00 pm – 7:00 pm) and weekends.
Also, work experience in a library setting is highly preferred. A formal job description will be provide to candidates who will be interviewed by the selection committee.
